Overview:Improvement

In this module, you will look at the five sections of the ISTE NETS-A standard for Systemic Improvement and reflect on how as an instructional learner can influence and create a better learning environment for our students.

Assignment:

After reviewing each of the Systemic Improvement performance indicators, you will write a reflection in the forum.  Since this will be a rather long post, you should consider creating it offline and pasting it into the forum when you are ready to submit your thoughts.

Here's the first performance indicator 4a:

Educational Administrators lead purposeful change to maximize the achievement of learning goals through the appropriate use of technology and media-rich resources.

Locate your school districts technology plan on your website. How is this standard addressed in the plan? What do you interpret the language to mean? What activities are you observing around this standard and goal in your school?

Indicator 4b

Collaborate to establish metrics, collect and analyze data, interpret results, and share findings to improve staff performance and student learning

We know that schools are continually looking academic data. For this indicator, describe how you school is using this standard in the area of student technology use.  How about your staff's technology utilization to improve student learning outcomes? What barriers do you see?

Indicator 4c

Recruit and retain highly competent personnel who use technology creatively and proficiently to advance academic and operational goals

You may need to speak with your Human Resources staff or principal for parts of this one.  When you hire a new employee, what sort of assessment of their technology ability takes place? If you can't find an answer to this, describe what you think a new employee in your district (teacher or not) should be able to do? How are your existing staff provided with new learning around technology use?

Indicator 4d

Establish and leverage strategic partnerships to support systemic improvement

Investigate how your school and district goes about purchasing technology for your classrooms. What is the process for making decisions on the what to buy and where to get it from? Is that decision one based on collaboration with teachers or is it done by someone in another role? What do you think should happen?

Indicator 4e
Educational Administrators establish and maintain a robust infrastructure for technology including integrated, interoperable technology systems to support management, operations, teaching, and learning.

How easy is it for your teachers ad students to use the technology that they have? Can a student get on your WiFI network using their own device?  How's the bandwidth and coverage in your buildings? Do you think your school is ready to implement online assessments?  What sort of measures do you think you school needs to do right now to do these things?
